The first mammals from what would eventually be called the Paleocene Epoch were discovered in northwestern New Mexico in the 1880s. Since that time, paleontologists have collected thousands of Paleocene fossils from New Mexico.

New Mexico fossils from this time include turtles, crocodiles, and some of the first mammals to live in a world without dinosaurs. By the end of the Paleocene, mammals had diversified into many different groups, but few would seem familiar to us today.
